About New gTLD Round
Who applied for which new gTLD in the ICANN 2026 round?
New gTLD Round lists every application ICANN published for its 2026 round: 1,614 applications for 986 strings. It traces each applicant company to the group behind it, shows which strings are contested, lists every backup string and whether it is still live, and forecasts how many names each open extension holds once it matures.
How to use it
- Start with the overview: who filed the most, which strings are contested, and the forecast for the whole round.
- Open Strings to sort and filter every applied-for string. Select one to see its applicants, their backups, and the forecast.
- Open Contested to see every contention set and its applicants.
- Open Strings, then Backups, to see each applicant’s backup string and whether it can still switch to it before October 21.
- Switch the model lens between Historic, Modern, and Blend to see how the forecasts change.

- Our attribution of each applicant company to a parent group, from filings and public records. Each link carries a confidence level and its evidence.
- Forecasts
- Toyroom’s registration model. Forecasts are registered names at maturity, about year four, with a low and high range. We do not predict who wins a contested string or what it costs.

Questions
What is a contention set?
A group of applications for the same string, or for strings ICANN treats as too similar to coexist. Only one can be delegated. ICANN resolves the set through community priority evaluation or a last-resort auction.
What is a backup string?
Each application could name one backup. For 14 days after Reveal Day, until October 21, 2026, an applicant can switch to it. The switch is one-way. ICANN deactivated a backup when another applicant filed the same string.
Why do so many applicants share one owner?
Registry groups file each string through its own company. One group can appear under dozens of names. The Applicants view lists each group’s companies with the evidence for every link.
What does a forecast of 20,000 names mean?
The model expects the extension to hold about 20,000 registered names once it matures, around four years after launch. The range shows the low and high cases. Closed brand extensions are not forecast.
